Venetian plaster for Brisbane homes
Venetian plaster is slaked lime and marble dust, built up in thin layers and burnished until it reads as stone. The wall gains depth and a soft sheen, and it stays cool to the touch.
We apply it to feature walls, stairwells, fireplace surrounds, ceilings and bathrooms, often alongside a builder or architect during fit-out. At Mark Street in New Farm it runs up a stairwell, and at Hutch & Co in Bulimba it lines a salon fit-out.

Polished
Burnished until the surface reflects, with the colour shifting as you walk past. The most formal of the three, and the one that shows every flaw in the wall behind it.
Matt
The same lime plaster left unburnished, so it reads as stone. Quieter in a room that already has hard surfaces.
Textured
We keep the trowel marks in. It suits a wall where you want to see the hand that made it.

Lime and acrylic plaster
You will see it sold under Italian names such as marmorino and grassello. The names describe how fine the marble dust is and how far the surface gets polished. Some products sold as Venetian plaster are acrylic. They go on faster, and up close they look flatter. We work in lime.
Lime breathes, so it copes with Brisbane humidity better than a sealed acrylic film. Its high pH resists mould on walls that take steam.
Bathrooms and showers
Lime plaster suits bathroom walls, vanity walls and powder rooms. Inside a shower recess, where water hits the wall every day, plaster needs a sealed wet-area system and more upkeep.
The downsides
- A hard knock can chip it. Chips patch well on matt and textured finishes and can show on a high polish.
- It shows any flaw in the wall behind it, so the wall has to be flat before plaster goes on.
- A high polish shows marks and fingerprints more than a matt finish.
Looking after it
Wipe it with a soft damp cloth. Skip harsh cleaners, which damage the wax or sealer. If a high-touch area dulls after some years, a fresh coat of wax brings the sheen back.
For a softer, chalkier wall, look at limewash and French wash.
